Wappingers Teacher, Spackenkill Coach Greg Diamond Dies At 29

Gregory Andrew Diamond, 29, a popular teacher and coach at John Jay and Roy C. Ketcham high schools, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Dec. 30, at his home in Poughkeepsie. The cause of his death has not been released.

Born on April 28, 1988, in Newburgh, to Lawrence and Andrea (Lapidus) Diamond, the math teacher and JV boys basketball coach at Spackenkill and an assistant varsity coach, graduated from Spackenkill High School in 2006 and was part of their state championship baseball team. 

He continued his love of playing baseball at Mount St. Mary College where he graduated with his master's degree in 2012. 

Diamond was part of many sectional championships as a coach and a player in both basketball and baseball and had a deep love for sports, especially the New York Yankees, the New York Rangers, and the San Francisco 49ers. He also worked as an umpire for the Hudson Valley Umpire Association along with his father and uncle and was a long-time volunteer at St. Martin De Porres where he coached CYO basketball.

He is survived by his wife, Cassi Diamond and their two sons, Jordan and Austin Diamond, his parents, Larry and Andrea Diamond, and his uncle, Chris Diamond, his wife, Gina Diamond, and their two children, Mark and Marissa Diamond. He is also survived by many cousins, his wife’s family, and countless friends.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, Jan. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Parmele, Auchmoody & Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave., Poughkeepsie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 6, at St. Martin De Porres Church, 118 Cedar Valley Road, Poughkeepsie.
